…You can actually tell the ultimate power, God himself to move in our direction.
I know you’re tired, I’m tired too. What’s right, what’s easy, what’s convenient and what’s wrong get blurred sometimes. Some days, we get lost inside our lives, inside the things we need to get done just to keep our hearts and minds together. We’re living inside our homes, but beside ourselves with worry. and one more thing just seems like one too many.
On days like these prayer helps. It doesn’t have to be prayer to a vengeful God, or soft words to comfort battered souls. It can be simple statements of what is required, what can still be done and what needs to be imagined. There’s a way to speak to the powers that are. Call them what you wish, their function is to bring our desires to life in this life. But there’s an umm… right way to do it? Bear with me, it doesn’t take long.
Gregg Braden introduced me to this path years ago, let me share his method and together we can cobble together our prayer for a President. One that has the very best chance to work. The method is simple, if you’re a Christian, you already know it but anyone can apply the technique. See Matthew 6:9.
After this manner therefore pray ye:
Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as [it is] in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever.
Embedded in the passage is the formula for successful prayer. Here’s how it goes.
It begins with a declarative statement to the powers that be. Our Father, who art in heaven. Not a physical father, not a demonic entity; this refers to the power that resides in the most sacred of places. The ultimate Boss, the Godhead itself. The energy that moves the universe and everything that is -into the spaces where what is, isn’t.
I hope that makes some sense. We are asked to recognize this force, name it directly, and understand it’s power. The prayer continues with an understanding the power of All that is, will be expressed both in heaven where it resides and on earth where you reside. When we invoke this power we call on all the forces of light and goodness. In the presence of this power no darkness can stand. This is what gives power to the prayer.
Next comes the commands.
You heard that right. Commands, you can tell the ultimate power, God himself to move in our direction. Give us this day our daily bread, Forgive us our debts, Lead us not, Deliver us from evil. Aren’t those commands?
In the original Aramaic, the prayer ends here. What follows is called the Doxology, words of praise added to the end of many passages and hymns etc. That’s the entirety of the prayer and the prescribed template for petitioning God.
Let’s use this template to make a prayer for our president. I know the things I don’t want, I’m a little shaky on what I actually do want. To clarify what my wants are, I’ll start with the things I don’t want and flip them inside out to figure out what I actually desire. This is a technique I learned from the ‘Abraham Hicks’ books. It’s called a pivot and I quite like how it works.
It goes like this. I don’t want Covid to continue to hurt our country. I don’t want to wake up in fear for the lives of my family and friends. I don’t want our economic concerns to be harmed by our health concerns. I don’t want our President to act without heaven itself lending him direction.
What I want therefore is the opposite. I want a President who will have wisdom and judgement from God himself. I want a president who can act with compassion and understanding, and who will know whatever he does for the least of us, he does on behalf of God. I want our economy to recover. I want Covid gone and I want to return to life pre-Covid. So here’s my prayer for our President.
Heavenly father, power in Heaven, Lord of the Universe and everything within, holiest of holies, our savior and spiritual master,
I know your will is irresistible both in heaven and on earth and I stand in awe and worship your glory.
Let our President know the suffering of your people Lord.
Give him wisdom to spare us the growing pains of a fractured economy and our broke and broken bodies.
Help him Lord, to find a way out of the swamp we all have helped build around us. A swamp where even the best of us can be filled with the bitter waters of hate and intolerance.
Bring peace to our hearts oh Lord. Bring kindness. Bring the understanding of the ages to us that we may make our way back to the promised lands.
This we pray in the name of Jesus Christ, our personal savior.
Try the template out for yourself. I genuinely wish you well. Perhaps we can make our world. just a little bit better if we pray together.
