The Hypersonic missiles are out
‘there is no single operational missile defense system that is capable of intercepting a hypersonic missile’. Defence iQ
Thus far, Russia has stuck to conventional ordnance. Guns, Tanks, bombs, subsonic missile delivery systems, with devastation in human lives and infrastructure in their wake.
Hypersonics are another thing entirely.
Russia's new Ukraine weapon: What is a hypersonic missile?
The Russian army said on Saturday that it fired hypersonic missiles in Ukraine, the first known use of the new weapon…
Russia has finally deployed their Kinzhal/Kinjal missiles to destroy a Ukrainian defensive warehouse buried underground.
Hypersonic missiles can generally fly at 5X the speed of sound, (Mach 5). That works out to about one mile per second. The Kinzhal missiles are reported to be twice as fast; Mach 10 -two miles per second.
According to an article in 2018, Defence iQ suggests ‘there is no single operational missile defense system that is capable of intercepting a hypersonic missile’. I’m certain technology has improved and you can in fact target hypersonic missiles.
But you can’t shoot them down easily and not without great cost.
Kinzhal missile systems can be used as platforms for both conventional ordnance and nukes.
So yeah, the Russian bear is baring its teeth.
Putin is clearly demonstrating he has the capability to reach out and destroy targets anywhere within 1200 miles. Buried underground, above ground, floating in the sea it doesn’t matter. And there doesn’t seem to be much of a defense against them.
This time he used conventional explosives. He doesn’t have to; he has room to escalate further.
Russia isn’t the only state power with hypersonic weapons.
General John Hyten thinks China has built them with potential first strike capabilities -even against the US.
